Sump Pump Installation Cost in 2026: Why the Pump Is the Cheap Part

Cost figures last reviewed September 5, 2026

The pump costs $100 to $800. The job costs $800 to $3,000. That gap is the whole story of this project, and it explains why two quotes for the same basement can differ by thousands while the box on the shelf is identical.

What decides your number is not the pump. It is whether a pit already exists in your floor.

The 2026 numbers

SourceAverageRange
Angi$1,100$800–$3,000
This Old House$1,400$500–$4,000
HomeGuide$1,600$600–$2,500 typical
Three sources, three averages. The spread is mostly about whether a new pit is being cut.

Replacement versus a first installation

ScenarioCost
Swap a pump into an existing pit$350–$1,000
Fit a new basin where one is roughed in$500–$1,200 labour
Cut a new pit through a concrete slab$2,500–$5,000 on top
Crawl space or exterior installation$1,500–$4,000
Dual pumps or two pits$2,000–$4,000+
One line here is worth more than every other decision combined.

Labour is 65-80% of a sump pump job, so the pump you choose barely moves the total.

HomeGuide is the only source that publishes a split, and it is stark: labour runs $500–$1,700 and is 65–80% of the bill, at $45–$80 an hour across eight to ten hours. Spending an extra $200 on a better pump changes your total by about 12%. Needing a hole cut in the slab changes it by 200%.

Pedestal or submersible — the answer is not the obvious one

PedestalSubmersible
Installed cost$800–$1,500$1,200–$3,000
Pump alone$80–$800$90–$1,000

The cheaper pump is also the longer-lived one. Submersibles win on quiet and on floor space, not on durability.

Most people are sold a submersible, and in a finished basement that is the right call — you will not tolerate a motor whining beside the sofa. In an unfinished basement where nobody sits, a pedestal is the better buy twice over.

Backup: the part that decides whether any of it works

Basements flood in storms. Storms take out power. A pump with no backup is a pump that fails at exactly the moment you need it.

  • Battery backup: $1,000–$2,000 installed. The battery itself needs replacing every few years at $50–$150.
  • Water-powered backup: $1,200–$2,500 installed, runs on mains water pressure so it never runs flat — but it needs municipal water and it uses a lot of it while running.

The discharge line, and a rule people break

Running the discharge above ground costs $150–$400. Burying it to daylight costs $250–$2,000 and is what you want if you would rather not look at a pipe.

What you cannot do — in nearly every US jurisdiction — is discharge into the sanitary sewer. It is prohibited, and enforcement is not theoretical: municipalities run dye tests, issue disconnect notices, and apply monthly surcharges that keep running until you disconnect. If a contractor offers to tie into the sewer line because it is easier, that is the moment to get a different contractor. This is long-standing law, not a new 2026 rule.

Running costs and the extras

ItemCost
Permit$50–$250
Electricity to run it$30–$50 a year
Professional service visit$100–$300
Replacement backup battery$50–$150 every few years
The pump is cheap to own. It is the installation that costs.

When a pump is the wrong fix

A sump pump removes water that has already arrived. If water is arriving because of grading, a failed gutter run or hydrostatic pressure against the wall, the pump treats the symptom and the wall keeps getting wet. The escalation, if it comes to that: an interior French drain runs $2,800–$6,500, and a full perimeter drainage system $4,000–$12,000.

Before spending on a second pump, check the cheap things first — downpipes discharging within a metre of the foundation, and soil that slopes back toward the house. Gutters are often the actual repair.

There is no resale figure for this

Sump pumps do not appear in the Remodeling Cost vs. Value report, and no cost guide publishes a recoup percentage. Anyone quoting one has made it up. What is true and unquantified: a dry basement is a precondition for finishing one, and a wet one is a disclosure item at sale.
